How To Unlock A Dell Keyboard? Ultimate guide

Do you sometimes face the problem of your keyboard’s keys not working? Many people come across this issue but not something that you should worry about. There are some easy fixes that you can try at home if you want to know how to unlock a dell keyboard. Just follow the guide below; so that you can figure out how you can do it by yourself.

In this guide below, we will show you the ways to unlock Dell Keyboard. There can be multiple different reasons why your dell keyboard is locked, but it is not a serious issue for which you will have to take some professional help.

You should know that getting your laptop’s keyboard locked is a different thing, and facing the sticky keys issues is different. Dell doesn’t call their keyboard locking mechanism lock, they call it sticky keys or slow keys, which means that if you press 2 keys together, it will not work until you release one of them (or press Caps Lock). If your keyboard keys are not working properly and if you suspect that you have locked them with a key lock software, you may be able to bypass the lock feature with the following solutions below.

How to unlock Keyboard on Dell Laptop

1. Check which type of keyboard you have

The first thing that you should do is check what kind of keyboard your laptop has. Dell laptops come with two types of keyboards. One is the chicklet-style keyboard, and the other is the membrane-style keyboard.

The chicklet-style keyboard does not lock the keys once you close it. However, you can turn it off with a function key. The membrane-style keyboard locks when closed, but can be unlocked using function key combinations like CTRL+SHIFT+NumLock.

Chicklet keyboards are more prone to moisture damage because they are more open. Whereas membrane keyboards have a solid shield around the keys that protect them from liquid spills and other liquids. The instructions for unlocking a Dell keyboard on each type are below:

2. Unlock the Fn keys

One of the major reasons why your Dell keyboard is locked can be because the functions keys are a lock. You can unlock them within a minute without any issue, and here is how you can do it.

  1. Open your laptop and then switch it on.
  2. Find the Fn key on your keyboard, which will help you to unlock the device.
  3. Now, there are two ways you can move forward. Check if your keyboard has the Numlock key or not. If it has the Numlock key press, the Fn key and while pressing it, press the Numlock key so that you can unlock your Dell keyboard.
  4. However, if you don’t have the Numlock key, press the Fn key and Esc key simultaneously, and that should do the trick.

3. Restart your device

This is kind of a universal solution for every issue that occurs in an electronic device. If you want to unlock a dell keyboard, try restarting your device. Sometimes your keyboard stops working due to some issue, but once you restart the device, it starts working properly. Thus, this is something you should try, and maybe it will solve your issue.

Unlock the Numlock key

Another thing you should try to unlock a dell keyboard is by unlocking the Numlock key. For this, open the settings from the start menu and go to the ease of access option. There you will see the Keyboard option, select it and then switch on the on-screen keyboard settings.

Now check if the num lock key option is present on the on-screen keyboard. However, if you don’t see it, go to the Options key, and from there check the box that says Turn on the number keypad. Press ok, and that should unlock the number pad on your keyboard.

4. Update your BIOS

If you’re still encountering problems and wondering how I can fix my Dell keyboard that won’t type, we recommend updating your BIOS. To do this, click on the start menu of the laptop, and then go to the control panel. From there select the System and Security option, where you will see the Bitlocker drive encryption option. Click on it and then choose the suspended protection option.

Once it’s done, go to the Dell support website from where you can download the latest updates on BIOS. After downloading the updates, run them on your system to update the BIOS. Your system might restart once the updating is complete, and this might unlock your keyboard.

5. Check your keyboard in BIOS

The first and easiest solution is to check your keyboard in BIOS. This will only work if the keyboard locks itself. Restart your laptop, find the BIOS menu and navigate until you see something related to the keyboard. You can find it by selecting Keyboard Lock, usually found under Boot Order. Once you’ve found this option, select disable it. Your computer should remember this setting every time.

If that doesn’t work, try turning off the keyboard lock with shortcuts on Windows 8:1. Move your mouse cursor towards the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Right-click on the search and select Settings. Under the General tab, press Turn off Touchpad when typing and then press Apply. To turn the touchpad back on, repeat steps 1-5.

6. Clean your keyboard

If you removed the keyboard cover and found that it was just sticky tape on the keyboard, then go ahead and remove the tape. Once you’ve done this, you may need to clean off any residue that’s left on the laptop keyboard.

First, use compressed air to remove any dust or debris from under the keys, and then wipe down with a slightly dampened cloth (No soaps please!). Then, allow your dell laptop keyboard time to dry before turning it back on. This will prevent any lingering odors.

In some cases, cleaning the keyboard is all that you need for an intermittent typing issue. Lightly press and release each key To clean away whatever is causing your problem. Cleaning is usually enough for most keyboards if they are not old or have been heavily used.

7. Update the keyboard driver

If you want to unlock a dell keyboard, you should try updating the keyboard driver. To do this, you will need to connect your laptop to a WiFi connection. Now go to the Device manager on your laptop and go to the keyboard option. Once your cursor is hovering over the keyboard option, a menu will open. Find the keyboard driver for the external keyboard that you are using, and by right-clicking on it, uninstall it. Now restart your device, and maybe that will solve your issue.

However, if that does not work, choose the driver of the built-in keyboard of the device by right-clicking on it and then clicking on update. Then click on the search automatically for updated driver software and wait for the drivers to get updated.

8. Optimize your System

Sometimes the laptops stop working properly because they are not thoroughly optimized. You can optimize your dell laptop by following some simple steps.

  • Restart your laptop and then press the F12 key. This is to check if the problem occurring is mechanical or not. If the boot menu opens, that means you are not facing a mechanical issue.
  • Now you should scan the entire system by going to the diagnostics option to identify the issue. Now click on Esc and next to move forward with the process.
  • From the component list, choose the keyboard option, which will allow the diagnostics to only scan the keyboard.
  • If you see an error code, note it down and consult the dell support team for further help.

How to Change the Hardware of a laptop?

When we talk about a keyboard that is not working, that might mean that you have a hardware issue. Above we have mentioned all the solutions, you can try at home. But if it is not working, then we suggest taking professional help. However, if you don’t want to do so, you can try looking into the laptop’s hardware yourself.

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of your laptop and then open it. Locate the hinge on your keyboard, and by using a pin or small flat-head screwdriver, press in on this tab while pulling up on the keyboard’s cable connector. This will release it and allow you to remove it easily.
  2. Flip over your laptop so that you are facing its rear panel and locate the five screws around its edge, which attach the panel to the chassis. Take these out with an appropriate size Phillips screwdriver. Lift off the panel to reveal all the components inside.
  3. Find the two rubber stoppers at each end of your trackpad cables (these should be just under where you found the screws). There should be two – one on either side of your trackpad. Once again using a pin or small flat-head screwdriver, push these stoppers outwards and at the same time pull up on both ends of both trackpad cables until they snap free from their connectors at both ends.
  4. Your computer is now completely disassembled, meaning if you have to replace something, you can now do it much more easily. If the keyboard isn’t the problem, move on to replacing other hardware such as the trackpad or wireless card.
  5. With your newly replaced hardware back in place (you might want to test it before moving on to anything else), reattach the bottom of your laptop by lining up all of its edges and inserting those five screws into their respective holes, make sure that none are protruding outward too far and don’t forget about the two rubber stoppers. Put on the top piece by lining up its edges and pressing down gently until you hear them click into place.
  6. Once everything is back together, reconnect the power cable and try turning your laptop on ̶ if nothing happens, check for any loose connections and fix them.

How can you Unlock Bluetooth keyboards like K811 and Yoga Book?

Most Bluetooth keyboards do not need the keyboard lock to function. So for those, it doesn’t matter if your laptop’s keyboard lock is off/on. However, if they do get affected by your laptop’s keyboard, try turning the key lock off on your computer keyboard. To do this, hold down the fn key and then press the num lock or caps lock key if you have one on your keyboard.

If this doesn’t work, try going into Settings and clicking on Hardware and Sound > Control Panel Home > Keyboards > Scanners and Cameras. Scroll down until you find Unlock Automatic Scans. Click on that tab and then tick off the box next to Enable Keystroke Sequence Monitoring. You will now be able to type again when connected via Bluetooth!

How to Unlocking Mechanical Keyboards Like XPS 15 (9560)?

Plug in your keyboard and turn on your computer. Press the blue button next to the lock switch (to the left of F12) with your pinky, or use any other small object like a pen or paperclip. Hold it down for about 3 seconds, then release it. After releasing the button, if the keys aren’t currently locked, hold down the shift key and press one of the following keys: CTL+, CTL-, CTL1-CTL0.

These will help prevent unintentional activation of any Fn-keys. You can also do this by disabling the touchpad instead of locking all of the keys. Just hold Ctrl+Alt+Del while tapping the power button. If you have an XPS 15 9560 laptop with Windows 10, you’ll need to download Dell EMC Driver Update Utility from Microsoft Store.

From there, run the application and choose Update drivers at the top right. Scroll down until you see Dell Keyboard. Select that option, which should automatically detect your device. Once installed, restart your computer and try using the keyboard again!
