Thus, it always comes in handy if you know how to create your project at home, from materials that you can find easily.

There are some things that you will need to get to create a projector. Thus, follow the guide given below to be able to create a DIY projector on your own.

Tools & Materials

You don’t need a lot of money or investment if you want to make a projector at home. Most of the stuff you will need you will be able to find at your home. Here are the tools and materials you need to project a laptop screen to the wall without a projector: a laptop or smartphone, tape, pencil, magnifying lens, glue stick, precision knife, cardboard box, and Black matte paper.

Step by Step guide to Building a DIY projector at Home

It might sound a bit daunting to create a projector all by yourself, at home. But if you are good at following steps, this should not be a problem for you. There are many steps that you must go through, in order to connect your computer’s display with a larger surface for an audience. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of setting up your display and projecting it onto the nearest surface with a few affordable tools.

Here are a few steps to follow:

Step #1: Check the Size of the Box and Mirror

Find a box that will fit on top of your computer, laptop, or smartphone screen perfectly. The size of the box should be just like the size of the screen, but if the box is long, it will be to your advantage. The width should be equal to the width of your computer so that it does not block any part of your view. You will need a magnifying glass as well, preferably a large one. Now place the glass in the box and trace its placement using a pencil.

Step #2: Dim the Interior

Dimming the interior is very important when creating a DIY projector. This is where the black paper that we mentioned above comes in. The first thing you need to make sure of is that the box you are using has two open sides. If not, use a knife and cut out two opposite sides of the box open. Make sure to do it carefully so that you don’t damage the box’s walls.

Once done, paste the black paper on the inner walls of the box using the blue. This will absorb all the unnecessary lights and will prevent the box from reflecting the light and images. However, if you don’t have black paper near you, just use black cloth or black paint if you have them.

Step #3: Add the Lens

Remember when you traced the magnifying glass in the middle of the box? Slice the box according to the tracing and fix the lens/magnifying glass that you will be using in that place.

Step #4: Create a Hole for the Phone

This part is optional, but you might want to make a hole in your phone. This comes in handy if you are making a projector for your cell phone. Use another small box and cut one side of it according to the size of your screen.

Make sure that no surface of the second box is shiny. And if it is, try to cover it with black paper. Now place the small box inside the big box so that you can use and put focus on your smartphone.

Step #5: Set Up the Laptop or Phone

Once you have your surface in place, you can set up your laptop or phone. Place your devices inside the box that you have prepared and start streaming the movie you want to watch. Switch over to Netflix on your laptop (or another app), and voila!

The image should now be playing on both screens at once! However, you might come across the mirror effect. This means that the video will appear rotated. There are a couple of ways you can deal with it, like auto-rotating the video before watching or by downloading and editing the video to change its orientation.

How to Adjust the Focus in a DIY projector?

The simple way to do it is by moving the lens closer or far Away from Your Display, or you can just move the display itself. Moving the screen close or far away from your lens will change how much light is passing through and allow you to change the focus. For example, if your goal is to look at a letter-sized document, move it as close as possible and then tilt it back and forth so that all parts of the paper image are crisp.

Can you use Flashlight as Projector?

Another way to create a DIY projector is to use a flashlight. This is an effective way if you are creating a projector for your smartphone. However, if you don’t have a light, you can use a wooden can and create a flashlight type of structure using it. However, if you want to learn how you can create a projector out of a flashlight, check out our guide about it.
